Police have recovered the dismembered body of Abu Rayhan Talukder, a sepoy of Bangladesh’s Kamalapur Customs House, in Fulbaria upazila of Mymensingh, 10 days after he went missing.
The body was recovered on Sunday afternoon from an abandoned pond next to his home in the Sowaitpur area of Enayetpur union in the upazila.
The dismembered parts of the body had been placed in three separate polythene bags inside a large travel bag.
Abu Rayhan Talukder was the son of the late Abu Bakar Siddique Talukder and Rahela Khatun of the same village. He worked as a sepoy at Kamalapur Customs House.
Police and family members said Abu Rayhan came to his home on the night of Thursday 23 July. The house caretaker was also at the house that night. The next day, Friday, the caretaker took him from the house, saying he was going to his workplace. He never reached his workplace after that.
Two days later, a colleague of Abu Rayhan phoned his cousin, lecturer Nazmunnahar Beauty, to say he had not joined the office and that his mobile phone was switched off. Family members then began searching in various places.
Unable to find him, Abu Rayhan’s elder brother, Md Nurul Islam, filed a general diary (GD) at Fulbaria police station on the night of 27 July. During the investigation, police learned that the house caretaker and his friend had fled the area since the incident. Locals claimed both were drug addicts.
Fulbaria police station officer-in-charge (OC) Rashedul Hasan said the dismembered body had been recovered from the pond inside a travel bag. Several police teams were working to arrest those involved in the incident, he said.
