Former Nepalese prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba returned to Nepal after five months in Singapore for medical treatment. Supporters warmly welcomed him at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport on Thursday after he travelled through Thailand.

Deuba faces political and legal challenges. He was removed from party leadership at a controversial special general convention in January. Authorities began a money-laundering investigation after protesters burned a large amount of cash at his residence during last September’s Gen-Z movement. Nepal froze his domestic assets and bank accounts, and an arrest warrant was issued for Deuba and his wife, former foreign minister Arzu Deuba. The Supreme Court cancelled the warrant on May 25. The status of the investigation after his return remains unclear.
