The government has approved the import of 900 metric tonnes of onion through the Sonamasjid land port in Chapainawabganj.
Samir Chandra Ghosh, deputy director of the Sonamasjid plant-quarantine centre, confirmed the decision on Monday morning. He said the government had cleared 900 tonnes of onion for import through the port against 30 import permits, and that shipments had already begun. On Sunday evening, two trucks carrying 60 tonnes of onion entered the land port from Mohdipur in India. Local retail prices have since fallen by 20-30 taka a kilogram, selling at 100 taka.
Ghosh said the previous onion shipment through Sonamasjid had arrived on 9 September.
