Over an allegation of extorting money in the name of securing government project benefits, a local Trinamool leader was paraded through the village wearing a garland of shoes, after which angry villagers cut his hair. The accused leader is Sannyasi Manna, known as an influential Trinamool leader in the Amradaha gram panchayat area of Shyampur. According to local sources, there had long been allegations that Sannyasi Manna took money from various people in the name of securing government benefits, including the 100-days’ work scheme and housing projects.

Sannyasi Manna did not entirely deny the allegations against him. He claimed money had been taken from a few people for some development work in the area, but said he was ready to return it. On receiving news of the incident, police quickly reached the area and brought the situation under control. Sannyasi Manna was then taken into custody and questioning began. Police have also begun investigating the corruption allegations against him, the cause of the public anger, and the breach of law and order.
