An aunt and niece drowned in the Tista River’s main irrigation canal in Dimla, Nilphamari. On the same day, a young motorcyclist was killed after a “nasimon” — a locally modified cargo tractor — struck his motorcycle on the Domar-Jaldhaka road.

A young girl fell into the Tista irrigation canal while playing near the sluice gate in the Kakra Tuhin Bazar area of Nautara union around midday Monday, August 17. Her 12-year-old aunt waded in to try to rescue her and drowned as well. Local residents recovered both from the water, but they had already died.

Separately, 20-year-old motorcyclist Shahajan Islam was killed around 10:00 a.m. Monday when a nasimon struck his motorcycle in the Tinbot area of the Domar-Jaldhaka road. Two relatives riding with him, Mominur Islam and Lokman Hossain, were injured in the same crash.

Local residents said Shahajan had been riding to the Nilphamari passport office with the two men when a nasimon loaded with cattle struck the motorcycle, overturning it and pinning all three riders underneath. He was declared dead at the hospital.

Police said the bodies would be handed over to relatives once legal procedures are completed in both cases.
