Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has stressed the importance of building women into educated and self-reliant citizens. He said the country’s desired development would not be possible in any way if half its population — that is, women — were left behind. To expand women’s education and make them self-reliant, the education system will be made fully free up to the degree (bachelor’s) level, and stipends will be awarded based on results, he said.

He made the remarks on Saturday (June 13) at a gathering held after the inauguration of a re-excavation program for the Patli canal in Cox’s Bazar Sadar.

The prime minister said the current government had begun implementing its election pledges “before the ink had even dried” on voters’ fingers.

Underscoring the importance of women’s education, he said the country would not move forward unless women were educated and self-reliant. With that goal in mind, the education system would be made free up to the degree level, and stipends would be awarded based on results, he said.

He also said “family cards” were being given to rural mothers to help make them self-reliant.

Saying the current government wanted to ensure health care, he said the previous government had imposed taxes on many aspects of medical care, while the current government had withdrawn those taxes in the budget. Taxes had been removed in many cases to reduce treatment costs, he said. From July, treatment costs for heart and kidney patients would be cut by half.
