Newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will travel to Thakurgaon on a two-day visit. He is set to arrive in Thakurgaon on August 30 and return to Dhaka on August 31 after the visit. Relevant authorities have been instructed to make the necessary administrative, accommodation and transport arrangements for the president’s visit.
A letter was sent Monday, August 24, from Bangabhaban’s protocol wing to the relevant authorities. The letter said President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will visit Thakurgaon district on August 30 and 31, returning to Dhaka on August 31 after the visit.
The letter requested that relevant authorities arrange the necessary administrative support, accommodation and transport for the president and his entourage, adding that the detailed schedule and the approved list of accompanying officials would be sent later.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the BNP’s candidate, won the presidential election held in the national parliament on August 20 with 255 votes, becoming the first president elected through a parliamentary vote in 35 years.
Colonel (retd.) Oli Ahmed, chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and candidate of the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance, received 88 votes in the election.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was sworn in the following day, Friday, August 21, as the country’s 23rd president, in a ceremony at Bangabhaban’s historic Durbar Hall. The Thakurgaon visit will be one of his first district tours since taking the oath of office.
