Kazi Salahuddin has again become president of the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF). The SAFF congress was held in Bhutan on Saturday (1 August), where the agenda included the election of the executive committee. There was no contest for any of the posts. Like everyone else, the former Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) president became the boss of South Asian football unopposed.
Under Article 24.2 of the SAFF constitution, if the number of candidates for a post does not exceed the number of vacancies, the candidates concerned are deemed elected unanimously.
Kazi Salahuddin has served as SAFF president since 2009. This is his fifth election to the post.
The SAFF constitution had long stated that no one over the age of 70 could stand for any post on the executive committee. But that rule was scrapped unanimously last year at a SAFF special general meeting in Colombo, when the age limit was removed. That left no obstacle to Salahuddin standing.
Bangladesh’s representation on the new executive committee is also growing. BFF vice-president Sabbir Ahmed Arif is set to become a member of the SAFF executive committee for the first time. Sri Lanka’s Jaswar Umaru Labbe is being elected unopposed as vice-president, and Hussain Shafiu of the Maldives will be another executive committee member.
