Prime Minister Tareque Rahman has issued three directives, including an increase in solar-power generation, to address Bangladesh’s energy crisis.
Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu said the prime minister gave the instructions at a solar-power meeting at the Secretariat on Monday.
Shiplu said the three directives were intended to address the energy crisis and increase renewable-energy use. Solar panels will be installed in phases on important government buildings, the government will support imports of raw materials used to manufacture solar inverters, and officials will develop an effective economic model to make solar power affordable, accessible and financially attractive to the public.
He said the meeting decided that the first phase would install panels on Bangabhaban, the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon, the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, the Prime Minister’s Secretariat office, the Finance Ministry building, the Planning Commission building and other important government facilities.
Rahman told the meeting that beginning solar-power use in government buildings would encourage the public to adopt the technology, Shiplu said.
The meeting also said the economic and practical benefits of solar power should be widely publicized to increase consumer interest.
A presentation said the technology could run air conditioners, fans, elevators and other electrical equipment, Shiplu said.
Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury; the prime minister’s Economic and Planning Adviser Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir; Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives State Minister Mir Shahe Alam; Bangladesh Investment Development Authority Executive Chairman Ashik Chowdhury; National Board of Revenue Acting Chairman Ahsan Habib; and secretaries and senior officials from several ministries attended.
