A court has sentenced a young man detained with cannabis in Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga to six months’ simple imprisonment after a mobile summary trial. The senior judicial magistrate’s court in Chuadanga delivered the verdict on Monday (July 13) afternoon.
The convict, Shihab, 20, is the son of Santu Rahman of Khoyerhuda village in Jibannagar upazila. According to police, at about 3 a.m. on Monday, on the directive of Superintendent of Police Ruhul Kabir Khan and under the leadership of Jibannagar police station officer-in-charge (OC) Solaiman Sheikh, sub-inspector Mrinal Kumar Das and accompanying officers conducted a drive, on the basis of secret information, in the area near the Chingrikhali bridge on the Changkhali road in Shakharia village of the upazila. Shihab was detained with cannabis during the drive.
He was later produced before the summary trial court, which found him guilty under section 36(1), table 29(ka) of the Narcotics Control Act, 2018, and sentenced him to six months’ simple imprisonment. Jibannagar police station OC Solaiman Sheikh confirmed the incident and said the convict had been sent to Chuadanga district jail after the verdict was announced.
