LEIPZIG, Germany — At least two people were killed and several others injured when a driver plowed into a crowd in the eastern German city of Leipzig, the BBC reported, citing local authorities.

Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung said the suspect was a 33-year-old German national who has been arrested. His motive remains unclear, Jung said.

German police confirmed the car attack on the central Grimmaische Strasse. Authorities said 22 people were injured, three of them critically.

Saxony state premier Michael Kretschmer said the suspect had previously suffered from mental health problems.

Leipzig police spokeswoman Susanne Lubeck said a man drove into a crowd around 5:30 p.m. local time. Several people were injured and “unfortunately, we have lost some,” Lubeck said.

The Leipzig public prosecutor’s office confirmed the identities of those killed. A 63-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man died in the attack, the office said. Both were German nationals.
