Two women killed in trolley-CNG collision in Jamalpur

Two unidentified women were killed in a head-on collision between an engine-driven trolley and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Melandaha upazila, Jamalpur. Four others were injured and are being treated in hospital. The accident happened at around 2pm on Sunday (19 July) in the Betmari Taltala area of the Jamalpur-Dewanganj regional highway.

Local sources said a CNG-run auto-rickshaw had set off from Dewanganj toward Jamalpur town with five passengers when, on reaching the Betmari Taltala area, it collided head-on with a fast-moving engine-driven trolley coming from the opposite direction. The auto-rickshaw was crushed and its passengers seriously injured. With locals’ help, the injured were taken to Jamalpur General Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared two women dead. The injured are Mojibar Rahman, 55, Jibon Mia, 35, Shafiqul Islam, 40, and NGO worker Fatema Akter, 52, of Dewanganj upazila, who are under treatment.

Dr Ujjal Kumar Sarker, medical officer of Jamalpur General Hospital’s emergency department, said two women had died in a serious road accident and the injured were being given necessary treatment. The identities of the two dead women had not been confirmed by the time of this report.
