Without commenting directly on the video controversy involving the party’s expelled member of parliament, Gazi Md Nazrul Islam, Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr Shafiqur Rahman has warned party members by implication. He said Jamaat is not a party of angels but an organisation of human beings. Mistakes can therefore happen, he said, but there will be no compromise on the question of ethics. Anyone who makes a mistake must come under correction.
The Jamaat Amir made the remarks to party members at Dhaka district Jamaat’s half-yearly members’ (rukon) conference at the Institution of Diploma Engineers in Kakrail in the capital on Friday. Welcoming criticism of Jamaat, he said: “Those who love the country and love the nation — if you see a wrong or an offence, point us out. I give you my word, we will correct it.”
Warning leaders, the Leader of the Opposition said: “If you are wearing white cloth, you have to be careful. Stains show up more on white cloth. Be careful — in Jamaat there is no concession on the question of ethics.”
In an apparent reference to the neighbouring country, he said Bangladesh does not want to interfere in anyone’s internal affairs, and others should not interfere in Bangladesh’s internal affairs either. Bangladesh wants to live in peace, he said. But if unrest is created at the border, both countries will have to bear the consequences.
Stressing communal harmony, Shafiqur Rahman said real peace can be established in society only through the correction of leaders and of policy.
Criticising the government’s position on implementing the constitution and the referendum result, he said: “Do not knead the constitution too much. Otherwise you will no longer find your own existence.”
The conference, chaired by the Amir of Dhaka district Jamaat, Muhammad Delwar Hossain, was addressed by Jamaat assistant secretary-general Rafiqul Islam Khan MP, executive council member Saiful Alam Khan Milon MP, and the Amir of Dhaka metropolitan south Jamaat, Nurul Islam Bulbul MP, among others.
