The Bangladesh Army has recovered and destroyed an abandoned mortar shell at Jaflong in Gowainghat, Sylhet.

Members of the army’s Sylhet bomb disposal unit destroyed the shell on Sunday afternoon (September 20) in the Nayaganger Par area of Madhya Jaflong union in the upazila.

Police said children playing in the Nayaganger Par area saw the mortar shell on Saturday evening. Several local youths then tried to smash the shell open. Having failed, they informed Gowainghat police, who reached the scene and moved people to a safe distance from the shell.

Police were then posted at the scene to guard the shell, and an application was made from the police side for the necessary steps to recover and defuse it. Army personnel then destroyed the shell through the bomb disposal unit, led by the army’s Sylhet ATO, Captain Monira.

The second officer of Gowainghat police station, Tanvir Foyez, was present along with army and police personnel.

Gowainghat police officer-in-charge Md Omar Faruk Morol said: “The mortar shell was kept in police custody at the station after it was recovered. Army personnel later destroyed it through the army’s Sylhet bomb disposal unit, following the application.”
