DHAKA — Jamaat-e-Islami MP Prof. Masud Mostafa, who represents Netrokona-5, demanded security for himself and his family in parliament Sunday, rising on a point of order as the parliamentary session began on the afternoon of April 26.

Mostafa said: “On the evening of April 24, I went to inquire about a long queue at the Atkapara petrol pump in Netrokona-5 (Purbadhala) constituency, when some terrorists posing as BNP members attacked me and vandalized my car. They then surrounded the nearby mosque where I had taken shelter and attacked me and my associates. They tried to break down the mosque doors. Professional thugs were brought in and there was an attempt on our lives. Nine people have been detained in the case, but only one is a listed suspect. The others are innocent.”

Mostafa demanded security for himself and his family, the arrest of the assailants, and their appropriate prosecution.

Local Government Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir then rose in parliament and said: “We are all saddened by this incident. Nine people have already been arrested. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has ordered a proper investigation and appropriate punishment of the actual culprits.”

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram said: “An attack on a member of parliament is most regrettable. The entire parliament agrees on this. Please await the outcome.”
