At least 10 people were injured in several rounds of clashes between two sides over irrigating farmland in Charfasson. Five of the injured were admitted to the Charfasson upazila health complex, while the others returned home after first aid. The incident took place on Friday evening in the Moulvibazar area of ward 6 of Nilkamal union, and tension persisted in the area on Saturday.

Mostafa, who is being treated in hospital, said Alam Company — a resident of ward 2 of Nilkamal union and a local BNP ward president — released water onto the dry farmland of Nasir, from the same area. Amid an exchange of words over this, a clash broke out.

Nirab, one of the injured, alleged that when he and his family members went to Moulvibazar in the evening, Alam Company, his brother Rashid, Foyezuddin, Shahin and several others attacked them. Sharif, Nasir, Noman, Mostafa, Nirab, Sajahan and at least 10 others were injured, he said. Locals rescued the injured and took them to the upazila health complex.

Nasir, admitted to hospital, claimed that local BNP leader Alam Company had been demanding extortion money from them for two years, and that the attack was planned because they had refused to pay. Alam Company denied the allegation, however, saying the other side had attacked them after an argument over irrigating the land, and that the extortion claim was baseless.
