The education and research secretary of the central committee of the Bangladesh Chhatra Union, Meghmallar Bose, has resigned from the organisation.

The central committee’s vice-president, Main Ahmed, has also resigned. The information was given in a notice signed on Saturday by the organisation’s general secretary, Shimul Kumbhakar.

The notice said the resignation letters submitted by Meghmallar Bose and Main Ahmed had been accepted by the central council. In Bangladesh’s current political context, their involvement with a new political platform meant that holding responsibilities in two political organisations at once could create organisational differences or a conflict of interest. On that consideration they voluntarily submitted their resignation letters.

It further said the central committee had decided to accept the resignations after reviewing the reasons for them and the political positions involved. Because of the same context and organisational realities, the central council’s vice-president, Nazifa Jannat, has also been relieved of her responsibilities in the Chhatra Union.

In the notice the Chhatra Union said the decision had been taken in the interest of protecting the organisation’s ideals and organisational transparency. Holding policy-making responsibilities in more than one political organisation at the same time is contrary to the Chhatra Union’s organisational structure and policy, it said.

The notice also said the Chhatra Union recalls with respect the contribution of the departing leaders during their tenure and wishes them success in their future political and personal lives. The organisation also reaffirmed its commitment to continue working with the same firm resolve for the right to education, non-communalism, democracy, the struggle against imperialism and the establishment of a socialist Bangladesh free of discrimination.
