The deputy leader of the opposition in the national parliament and Jamaat-e-Islami nayeb-e-ameer, Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher, has issued a warning against teen gangs and the drug trade. “There will be no place for drugs or teen gangs in Chouddagram,” he said. “They are being given six months to change their profession. Good people are in the majority, so everyone must unite and come out of their homes to root out crime from society. The anti-gang and anti-drug drive will be conducted under my leadership, and they will be given no quarter.”

Taher made the remarks at an Eid reunion and public reception in Chouddagram, Cumilla, on Sunday afternoon. The event was held at the Chouddagram central Eidgah ground on the initiative of the upazila Jamaat.

On the development of his constituency, the lawmaker said: “BNP in Chouddagram claims all development here will happen through them. To them I want to say — during the interim government I secured a 120-crore-taka allocation for infrastructure development in Chouddagram, and within three months of the election I brought another 100-crore-taka allocation.”

Answering reporters’ questions, Taher said: “The law and order situation is unfortunately deteriorating by the day. Incidents of child murder and rape are unacceptable. The main reason is that ruling-party people themselves are involved in them, and because of that, members of the law enforcement agencies often cannot take strong action even when they want to.”

On the BNP government’s role, he said: “People voted for BNP in the hope of reforming the constitution, improving the parliamentary system and building a Bangladesh free of corruption and militancy. But over the past few months we have not seen that kind of role from BNP, which is creating frustration. We do not want to call BNP a failed government just yet, but if this continues, their failure will become clearer to the people. I call on the head of government to quickly identify and solve the problems and move forward on the path of development.”

The event, conducted by Chouddagram upazila Jamaat ameer Mahfuzur Rahman and secretary Belal Hossain, was also addressed by Jamaat central assistant secretary general Abdul Halim, Cumilla South district ameer Muhammad Shahjahan and former Chhatra Shibir central president Jahidur Rahman.
