Eight years ago, during the 2018 World Cup, Brazil supporter Jamir Hossen painted his house in Chougacha, Jashore, in the colours of Brazil’s flag and named it the “Brazil house.” Eight years on, anyone in Chougacha town can give directions to the house. The colours may have faded a little over these eight years, but Jamir Hossen’s love for Brazil has not dimmed. The much-talked-about Brazil house stands at the Ishapur Bottola junction on the Chougacha-Kotchandpur road in Chougacha municipal town, Jashore.
Although Jamir Hossen is a resident of Panchanmana village in Chougacha municipality, he lives in his own home at Ishapur Bottola. During the 2018 World Cup he painted his then two-storey (now three-storey) house in the colours of Brazil’s flag and named it the “Brazil house.” On the ground floor of the house is the office of an NGO named Wave Foundation. Jamir lives on the first floor with his family. Alongside a motorcycle showroom called “Famous Auto” at the Jashore bus stand in Chougacha municipal town, Jamir Hossen also has a showroom for televisions and refrigerators.
Jamir Hossen said he loves football, and in football his love is Brazil. That is why, before the 2018 World Cup, he painted his house in the colours of Brazil’s flag. The colours are still there. Everyone in town knows his house as the Brazil house.
Recalling the past, Jamir Hossen said he spent 70,000 taka during the 2018 World Cup to paint the house in the colours of Brazil’s flag. He also bought 20,000 taka worth of Brazil jerseys. The team did not go very far. So he still has 75 jerseys from that time. There will be a procession with these this time, he said. The procession will be held with 200 to 300 motorcycles.
Jamir Hossen also said there would be wins and losses in football. But the hope is for good, exciting football. He said he hopes not only Brazil but Argentina too will play good football. “Just as there is excitement in an India-Pakistan cricket match, there will be excitement in a Brazil-Argentina football match. But it should never turn into conflict,” he said.
Excitement has broken out among supporters of various football teams across Chougacha in Jashore over the FIFA World Cup. The flags of favourite teams have been put up on the rooftops of many homes and along the roadside. A competition has also begun over who can fly the biggest flag.
