Education Desk:
Two students drowned in a pond at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET).
The incident occurred at about 1:30pm on Wednesday (August 12) in the pond beside Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall.
The deceased were Chomok Dutta, a second-year student of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and Shanto Deb, a second-year student of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Both were from Moulvibazar district in Sylhet.
Witnesses said Shanto and Chomok went into the pond to bathe with friends at about 1pm. They went under the water at about 1:20pm. When others noticed, they immediately entered the pond to rescue them. Chomok was recovered after about 10 minutes, while it took about 40 minutes to recover the other student. After initial treatment at the university medical centre, they were taken quickly to a private hospital in Chattogram, where doctors declared them dead.
Two weeks earlier, on July 28, fourth-year Mechanical Engineering student Arnab Saha drowned in the same pond. The university community was mourning again after the deaths of two more students before the earlier tragedy had faded.
The university administration said it planned to drain the pond to prevent further accidents and decided to enclose it with bamboo.
The university will also arrange two buses so students can travel to the homes of the deceased. Classmates and other university students will be able to use the buses.
