A 12-foot Burmese python has been rescued from Chittagong University (CU). Members of the rescue team from the Society for Snake and Snakebite Awareness (3SA), an organization working to raise awareness about snakes and snakebites, rescued the snake around midnight Tuesday, August 25.

The python was later released into the university’s deep forest area.

According to the organization, the python was rescued from a building next to Bhai Bhai Store, near the mosque in the university’s south campus.

After receiving a call on the helpline of Md Yaqub, the imam at Zero Point, 3SA rescue team members Md Imran, Md Zahid and Md Jihad went to the scene and rescued the python. The rescued snake was of the Burmese species, roughly 12 feet long and weighing about 20 kilograms.

Mohammad Imran, a member of 3SA’s rescue team, said: “It’s a Burmese python, about 12 feet long and weighing 20 kilograms.

“After rescuing it, we released it into the university’s deep forest area. Snakes like this come into populated areas for various reasons, including food shortages, hill-cutting and habitat destruction.”
