The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre has forecast short-term flood conditions in various districts of Chattogram, Sylhet, Mymensingh and Rangpur divisions.
The latest bulletin from the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre on Tuesday (July 7) also reported on rainfall and rising river levels. During this period, the port city of Chattogram recorded the highest rainfall in the country at 258 millimeters.
The center’s forecast said that due to very heavy rainfall, river levels in parts of Bandarban, Cox’s Bazar, Feni, Chattogram and Khagrachhari districts could rise above danger levels within the next 24 to 72 hours.
This could create short-term flood conditions in low-lying, river-adjacent areas of these regions.
In addition, with heavy rainfall forecast upstream in India’s Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and West Bengal, river levels in Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Netrokona, Sherpur and Mymensingh districts could also rise above danger levels.
Low-lying riverside areas in these districts could be temporarily inundated, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre said.
It also said the Teesta River in Rangpur could rise above danger levels, potentially causing short-term flood conditions in low-lying areas of Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat districts.
Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre executive engineer Sardar Uday Rayhan said that with heavy rainfall forecast over the next three to four days, rising river levels could trigger flash flooding in various districts of the country’s northern and southeastern regions.
“However, once rainfall eases after three to four days, river levels will also begin to recede. So the risk of the flooding becoming prolonged is low for now,” he said.
