A fire has broken out in a Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) crane used for unloading cargo at the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) of Chittagong port. The fire was later brought fully under control through the joint and immediate efforts of the port authority, the fire service and the navy.

The fire suddenly broke out at around 2:30 p.m. on Monday (June 22) in the crane numbered ‘RTG-4014’ in the berth no. 4 area of the NCT.

The control room of the fire service’s Chittagong regional office said it had received news of the fire inside the terminal at 2:55 p.m. As soon as the report came in, a rapid-response unit of the fire service rushed to the scene and began firefighting.

The Chittagong port secretary (additional charge), Md Nasir Uddin, said an RTG crane positioned at berth no. 4 at the southern end of the NCT had suddenly caught fire around midday. As soon as it was known, the port’s own firefighting team quickly went there and began work to put out the fire.

Considering the intensity of the fire, special teams of the Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence and the Bangladesh Navy’s fire service later joined the operation, he said. Through the coordinated and tireless efforts of the three forces, the fire was brought under control within a short time.

The port secretary said no casualties or major damage had been reported immediately. Having absorbed the impact of the fire, the port’s overall situation was now completely normal, with container-handling operations running as usual, he said.
