Prime Minister Tareque Rahman has said non-government teachers will no longer need to visit offices or deal with middlemen to collect their retirement benefits, with payments now being deposited directly into their bank accounts.
“Teachers will no longer have to go from office to office for their retirement money. There will be no harassment, no need to approach middlemen,” the prime minister said at a ceremony disbursing retirement and welfare benefits to non-government teachers at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka on Saturday.
He said teachers would now receive a message at home confirming their payment. “In the past, they had to pay bribes to get their allowances. Today, the money reaches their accounts far more easily than before,” he said.
Tareque Rahman criticized the previous Awami League government, saying it had “looted and crippled” the two retirement boards for non-government teachers through corruption.
He acknowledged that the retirement fund lacks adequate resources but said the government is making special arrangements to ensure teachers receive their dues. “Even after formal retirement, you remain teachers. Your contribution is universally recognized,” he said.
