GAIBANDHA — Itish Chandra Das, 45, an assistant teacher at Kholahati High School in Gaibandha Sadar upazila, died of smallpox at his home about 1 a.m. Monday, family members said.
Das was a resident of Bodghar Madhyapara village in Kholahati union of Sadar upazila. He taught agriculture at Kholahati High School.
According to family members, Das’s son contracted smallpox after returning from Dhaka two weeks earlier. Das, his wife and another son were then infected one by one starting on Tuesday.
Das had been seeking treatment from a traditional healer in a neighboring village. His condition deteriorated suddenly Sunday night, and he died about 1 a.m., family members said.
