A court has shown former Jhenaidah-3 MP Nabi Newaz as arrested in a case over the fatal shooting of garment worker Rubel in the capital’s Adabar police-station area during the July uprising.
Police produced him before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka from jail on Monday. The case’s investigating officer then applied to show him arrested in the case in the interest of a proper investigation. After a hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam granted the application to show him arrested.
According to the case, on 5 August 2024 Rubel and several hundred students and members of the public brought out a protest march in the Ring Road area of Adabar at around 11am. Police and activists of the Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League, Swechchhasebak League, Sramik League, Tanti League, Krishak League and Matsyajibi League opened fire, and Rubel was shot dead, the case states. Rubel’s father, Rafiqul Islam, filed the case at Adabar police station on 22 August that year.
