A decision has been taken to relieve a professor of the Bengali department of Dhaka University (DU), Chowdhury Md Tashrik-e-Habib, who went viral for singing on social media, of his academic activities. He has been relieved on the basis of complaints from teachers and students of the department.

The decisions were taken at a meeting of the Syndicate, the university’s highest decision-making body, on Monday night. The vice-chancellor, Professor A B M Obaidul Islam, presided over the meeting.

It was learnt that, in line with a recommendation by the academic committee of the Bengali department, the department’s teacher Tashrik-e-Habib had been relieved of his academic activities. Allegations against him included tarnishing the university’s image on social media.

Professor Tashrik-e-Habib had recently come into wide discussion by performing various popular songs on social media. He drew a notable response on Facebook singing songs of Shah Abdul Karim, James and Fazlur Rahman Babu, and as several of his songs quickly went viral, sharp criticism arose among a section of the students.
