Thousands of children have been killed in the Israeli offensive in Gaza since October 2023. An unusual initiative has been taken in their memory in the Netherlands, where thousands of pairs of children’s shoes were laid out in rows on Scheveningen beach in The Hague on 1 August.

The 7,000 shoes placed on the beach became a symbol of the lives of the children killed, highlighting the depth of the human impact of the war in Gaza. Participants gathered there through the day to pay their respects to the dead and to express solidarity with the Palestinian people. The organisers’ aim was to raise awareness about the Israeli offensive in Gaza.

According to recent United Nations figures, nearly 20,000 children have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza since 7 October 2023, and more than 44,000 children have been injured.

Thousands more children are missing and are feared trapped under the rubble.

In the besieged enclave, at least 1,32,000 (132,000) children under the age of five are at extreme risk from severe hunger, and many have died of starvation.
