Unknown assailants poisoned a fish pond in Juginda village, Gangnee upazila, Meherpur, under cover of darkness, killing large quantities of fish and causing an estimated Tk 30 lakh in losses, the pond’s owner alleged on Thursday (June 25).

The pond owner, Kamruzzaman, a garments businessman from Juginda village, said the attack took place during the night of Thursday. He discovered the mass fish kill when he went to feed the fish in the morning and found large numbers of dead fish floating on the surface. Local residents who rushed to the scene saw dead fish spread across the pond.

Kamruzzaman said his pond contained pangasbouri, rohu, katla, tilapia and other species, some weighing nine to ten kilograms and ready for market. He claimed the poisoning had caused approximately Tk 30 lakh in losses.

He added that he had received threats in various forms in the days before the attack and suspected the poisoning was a premeditated act carried out over a personal dispute. Local residents expressed outrage and demanded that those responsible be quickly identified and brought to justice.

Law enforcement authorities said they would investigate the incident and take necessary action upon receiving a formal complaint.
