Local residents detained five people with five buffaloes on suspicion of theft in Galachipa, Patuakhali, and handed them over to police.
They were arrested from Jhatibunia Bazar in the upazila around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27.
The arrested people are Mahmudur Rahman of Patuakhali Sadar upazila, and Khairul Islam Sagar, Md. Shahjada Sikder, Shahin Sikder and Zakir of Bakulbaria union in Galachipa upazila.
Local and police sources said the arrested people were taking five buffaloes stolen from an unidentified place past the front of Jhatibunia Bazar. Local residents found the matter suspicious and stopped them to ask about ownership of the buffaloes. When they could not provide correct information, residents detained them and informed police. Police reached the scene around 9 p.m. and arrested them. The five recovered buffaloes are now in the custody of local chowkidar Shakil, also known as Mintu Mia.
Kalagachhia police outpost Sub-Inspector Shahidul Islam said five people had been arrested in the buffalo theft incident. The buffaloes have been kept in the custody of a local chowkidar.
Galachipa Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Imtiaz Ahmed said a case had been filed over the buffalo theft.
