Jatiya Sangsad Speaker and war hero Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmad is travelling to Iran to attend the funeral of the country’s late supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He will leave Dhaka for Iran on 2 July.

Confirming the trip, Shairul Kabir Khan, a member of the BNP media cell, said the state ceremonies for the late supreme leader would be held in the cities of Tehran, Qom and Mashhad from 4 to 9 July. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad will attend the funeral on behalf of the Bangladesh government and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Besides the Speaker, several members of the Jatiya Sangsad are also expected to travel to Iran on their own initiative to attend the funeral.

Khamenei was killed in late February in airstrikes by US and Israeli forces. Iranian authorities expect about 2 crore (20 million) people to gather for his funeral and burial, according to a report by Al Jazeera.

The ceremonies are due to begin on 4 July in Tehran and Qom. The Mehr news agency, citing officials who did not wish to be named, said his burial would be completed on 9 July in Mashhad, his birthplace in the country’s northeast.
