Bangladesh’s National University, the country’s largest by enrollment, has decided to create a part-time teacher pool to address faculty shortages across its affiliated colleges.
The decision was taken at the 103rd meeting of the university’s Academic Council, held on Saturday at the main campus in Gazipur. Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ASM Amanullah presided.
The pool will include retired teachers with relevant qualifications and experience, as well as subject-matter experts from industry. The council approved the policy framework for forming subject-specific pools at various colleges.
In a significant move, the council also granted students from the 2013-14 through 2017-18 academic years who failed one or more subjects in their Honours degree a special opportunity to sit for re-examinations.
Three new programs were approved under the university’s skill-based Postgraduate Diploma: freelancing (covering graphic design, video editing and web design), culinary science (chef training) and human resource management.
To improve academic quality, the council introduced a 4-credit Applied ICT course for second-year students and a Functional English course for first-year students in both pass and Honours programs.
The council also discussed equivalency for students completing the 3-year Degree (Pass) plus 1-year Masters (Preliminary), which would make their qualification equivalent to a 4-year degree for civil service examinations. A high-level committee was formed to coordinate with relevant government offices for final approval.
“Our goal is to ensure that every student graduates with practical skills and is ready for the job market,” the vice-chancellor said. “The part-time teacher pool will leverage the knowledge of retired educators and industry professionals.”
