Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain Bokul has ordered all private clinics in Bangladesh to establish labor rooms for normal deliveries by next Saturday, warning that non-compliant facilities will have their licenses revoked and be shut down.
The minister made the announcement Monday at a workshop organized by the Bangladesh Midwifery Society (BMS) at a Dhaka hotel.
“The rate of unnecessary cesarean operations in the country has risen alarmingly. To control this trend and increase opportunities for normal deliveries, every private clinic must have a labor room. The health ministry will take a strict position on this,” the minister said.
He also said the government is preparing to make midwife employment mandatory at all private clinics, so pregnant women can receive counseling and care at the local level and be encouraged to have normal deliveries.
“Skilled midwives play an extremely important role in ensuring the safety of mothers and newborns. Increasing their involvement in maternity care can help reduce unnecessary cesarean operations,” the minister said.
Workshop speakers emphasized the need to strengthen midwives’ role in improving maternal health, ensuring safe deliveries, and creating an environment conducive to normal births.
