Muslim candidates sweep key West Bengal seats as Trinamool holds minority strongholds

KOLKATA — Several Muslim candidates have won seats in the West Bengal assembly election, with the Trinamool Congress taking the largest share of the wins, particularly in Kolkata, Murshidabad, North 24 Parganas, Malda and parts of southern Bengal. Candidates from the Indian Secular Front (ISF), Congress, CPM and the AIUDF also won in a number of constituencies.

In Kolkata, sitting legislator and former state minister Javed Khan of Trinamool Congress retained the key Kasba assembly seat, winning by a margin of 20,974 votes. Trinamool’s Firhad Hakim won another important Kolkata seat by 56,490 votes. Trinamool candidate Abdul Khalek Molla won the Metiabruz seat by a wide margin of 87,879 votes.

Murshidabad district saw a strong Trinamool showing among Muslim candidates. Babar Ali won from Jalangi, Niyamat Sheikh from Hariharpara, Mohammad Nur Alam from Shamshergunj, Mustafizur Rahman from Bharatpur and Bayron Biswas from Sagardighi. In the same district, AIUDF candidate Humayun Kabir won from Rejinagar and Nowda.

In North 24 Parganas, Trinamool’s Anisur Rahman Bidesh won the Deganga seat, with Abdul Matin winning from Haroa and Tousiful Rahman from Basirhat North. Burhanul Muqaddim Liton won from the Basirhat seat.

ISF’s Naushad Siddiqui drew attention with his win from Bhangar in South 24 Parganas. Baharul Islam won Canning East and Shamim Ahmed took Magrahat West for Trinamool.

Sabina Yasmin of Trinamool won Sujapur in Malda, while Kajal Sheikh won Hanshan in Birbhum.

Several opposition Muslim candidates also won. Congress’s Mahtab Sheikh took Farakka in Murshidabad, party colleague Julfiqar Ali won Raninagar and the CPM’s Mostafizur Rahman Rana won Domkal. Other Trinamool winners included Reyat Hossain Sarkar (Bhagabangola), Dr. Abdul Aziz (Lalgola), Imani Biswas (Suti), Akhruzzaman and Nazrul Islam, who won Mothabari for Trinamool.

Overall, the election showed Trinamool Congress retaining a commanding presence in Muslim-majority and minority-leaning seats, although the ISF, Congress, CPM and AIUDF also held visible ground in some key constituencies.
