Iran’s parliament speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf has accused US President Donald Trump of “repeatedly staging drama in the name of diplomacy.” Qalibaf made the accusation after Trump’s repeated claims to have ordered — then suspended — an attack on Iran.
The Iranian speaker made the accusation in a post on the social media platform X on Thursday. A few days earlier, Trump had claimed the basic framework of a deal with Iran had been reached, and that this was why he had suspended his latest decision to strike Iran.
Qalibaf dismissed the claim, saying the United States was repeatedly shifting position — backing away from military threats to offer talks. This strategy of pressuring Iran into submission had failed, he said.
Qalibaf wrote: “A major attack is coming… never mind, not needed, they want to negotiate — the same drama is staged again and again.”
He added: “Using threats, broken promises and disinformation as tools of pressure is a failed strategy.”
The Iranian speaker also said the United States should accept reality and implement the promises it had made.
Last Saturday, Trump cancelled plans for a major military strike on Iran. He claimed Iran and several other Middle Eastern countries had requested that no attack be carried out because diplomatic efforts were moving in a very positive direction.
Trump also claimed that under a possible deal the Strait of Hormuz would be fully reopened and Iran’s nuclear threat would end.
Meanwhile, Iran is continuing talks with Oman to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran says both sides have reached an understanding on shipping through the strait and that a deal is close to being finalised.
Before the war, ships passed freely through this vital energy-supply route. But after the 28 February attack by the United States and Israel, Iran effectively closed the strait. Tehran now says it has sovereign rights over the parts of the strait that fall within Iranian and Omani waters.
The closure of the Strait of Hormuz and tit-for-tat attacks on Middle East energy infrastructure have also pushed up global oil prices.
At the White House on Thursday, Trump told reporters he believes the ongoing war with Iran will end very soon. He expressed hope that energy prices would fall once the war ends.
Trump said: “I think the war will end very soon. I don’t think they [Iran] can hold out much longer like this.” He added that he was personally involved in talks with Tehran. “I think everything is going well,” he said.
But Iranian officials say they are prepared for a long war. Though Trump has for months claimed the war is near its end, Iran’s position differs.
