District detective police (DB) arrested five people and seized 160,000 yaba pills in a raid in the Paduarbazar area of Cumilla on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway. The seized yaba was worth about 4.8 crore taka (about US$3.9 million), police said.

The consignment of yaba, hidden using a special method, was seized after a covered van was searched in the Paduarbazar area on Thursday afternoon, June 18, in the presence of journalists.

Cumilla Superintendent of Police Md. Anisuzzaman said a large yaba consignment was being taken toward Dhaka from the Chouddagram area, escorted by a private car. Acting on a tip-off, detective police stopped the private car and questioned the driver and passengers. They eventually admitted that yaba was being smuggled in a covered van under the cover of transporting salt, he said. Based on their information, the covered van was stopped in the Paduarbazar area. Police then recovered 160,000 yaba pills from 16 packets hidden in a concealed part of the vehicle.

Those arrested are Shipon Sheikh of Sirajganj, the owner of the covered van; private car driver Rubel; passenger Sohel Rana; covered van driver Mojaher Sheikh; and helper Suruj Hossain.

Police said the seized yaba was worth about 4.8 crore taka. A case is being filed against those arrested under the narcotics control act, along with other legal steps, police said.
