DUBAI — A fragile cease-fire between Iran and the U.S.-backed coalition is facing renewed strain. The United Arab Emirates said it intercepted two Iranian drones fired toward the country, hours after overnight drone attacks targeted Kuwait. The incidents have raised fresh questions about whether the cease-fire will hold.
A bulk carrier off the coast of Qatar caught fire after being struck by a projectile from an unidentified source, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said. Deutsche Welle cited the agency’s statement.
The British military agency said the strike caused a small fire that was quickly brought under control. No casualties were reported.
Ships transiting the Persian Gulf have come under repeated attack over the past week even as the cease-fire between Iran and the United States remains in effect. The strikes have intensified concern about security along the critical maritime route. Iran is being blamed for the attacks, but Tehran has not acknowledged responsibility.
