Lieutenant Colonel — now Brigadier General — Miftah Uddin Ahmed, who was then the commanding officer of RAB-7, has been taken into army custody after being named as an accused in the International Crimes Tribunal case filed over the killing of the councillor Ekramul Haque in a “crossfire” incident at Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar. He was taken into army custody at 10.30pm on Monday.
The director of the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR), Lieutenant Colonel Sami-ud-Dowla Chowdhury, confirmed the matter.
Brigadier General Miftah Uddin Ahmed had been serving as station commander at Barishal Cantonment. His name was on the list of officials sanctioned by the United States State Department in 2021, alongside that of the former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed.
Charges in the Ekram killing case were filed at the International Crimes Tribunal on Sunday. Eleven people in all have been named as accused in the case. Arrest warrants have already been issued against absconding accused, including the former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Sources connected with the case said Brigadier General Miftah Uddin was taken into army custody on the basis of that warrant. He will be produced before the International Crimes Tribunal on the next scheduled date.
According to information connected with the investigation, the charges state that Miftah Uddin Ahmed and several other accused officers were present at the scene when Ekramul Haque was shot dead. The allegations have not been tested in court.
Ekramul Haque was killed in a reported gunfight at Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar on the night of 26 May 2018. He was the councillor of ward 3 of Teknaf municipality and president of the upazila Jubo League. The case drew nationwide attention at the time when an audio recording of the incident was leaked.
