Upazila administration and the Department of Fisheries in Kawkhali, Pirojpur, seized roughly 6,000 meters of illegal “China duari” fishing net during an operation targeting the banned gear. The seized nets were later publicly burned and destroyed.
The operation was carried out Monday afternoon, August 24, across various canals and wetlands in the Katalia and Nangoli areas of the upazila’s sadar union, aimed at enforcing fisheries protection and conservation law and eliminating illegal nets that destroy fish stocks.
The operation seized around 6,000 meters of China duari net, with an estimated value of about 70,000 taka. The operation was led by Upazila Fisheries Officer Md Hafizur Rahman, with a police team assisting.
After the operation, the seized illegal nets were publicly set on fire and destroyed.
Upazila Fisheries Officer Md Hafizur Rahman said: “The use of China duari and other types of illegal nets is severely damaging fish fry, aquatic life and fisheries resources. The upazila fisheries department is carrying out regular operations to protect fisheries resources and enforce fisheries protection law. This operation seized around 6,000 meters of China duari net, worth an estimated 70,000 taka.”
He added: “These operations will continue until the use of illegal nets stops. Anyone found using banned nets will face legal action. We call on local fishermen and everyone else to abide by government law to help protect fisheries resources.”
According to the Department of Fisheries, operations against illegal nets will continue to protect fisheries resources and ensure the breeding and propagation of native fish species.
