The Kaukhali naval police outpost has seized about 7,000 metres of behundi net — used for illegal fishing — during a drive on the Kacha river in Kaukhali upazila of Pirojpur.

The drive was conducted in the Pangashia area of the upazila from 11am to 4pm on Sunday (2 August).

It was led by the sub-inspector (SI) of the Kaukhali naval police outpost, Md Arman Hossain.

Two illegal behundi nets were recovered from the Kacha river during the drive.

The seized nets were about 7,000 metres long in total, with a market value of about 2 lakh (200,000) taka. The upazila administration was then informed, and the seized nets were burned and destroyed in public.

Upazila fisheries officer Md Hafizur Rahman said: “Behundi nets are completely banned. Using such nets indiscriminately traps fish fry, eggs and various small native species, which is severely harmful to fisheries resources. To protect the breeding and biodiversity of native fish, our drives of this kind will continue regularly. We also call on fishermen to fish in line with the law.”

SI Md Arman Hossain of the Kaukhali naval police outpost said: “The naval police’s drives against the use of illegal nets, banned fishing methods and the destruction of fisheries resources are ongoing. Acting on secret information, we conducted a drive in the Pangashia area and recovered two behundi nets. Such drives will be intensified further in future, and strict action will be taken against those who break the law.”

Locals said that if such regular drives by the naval police and the fisheries department continue, the use of illegal nets will fall and the river’s production of native fish will rise.
