An initiative has been taken to modernize the madrasa education curriculum and make it more job-market-oriented, with the goal of developing madrasa students’ skills and creating employment opportunities for them at home and abroad, according to Professor Dr Abdullah-Al-Mamun, a member of the Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC). He said a work plan on the matter would be finalized and implementation efforts launched within this month.
He made the remarks as chief guest at a workshop titled “Quality Improvement of Higher Education and Employment in Madrasas,” organized by the Islamic Arabic University. Professor Mamun said one of the key goals of various government initiatives for madrasa students is to make the curriculum job-market-oriented, develop skills and ensure employment. Through this, he said, the government wants to create employment opportunities for madrasa students both domestically and abroad.
He said the government wants to narrow the gap in skills and opportunities that has emerged between madrasa students and students from other streams of education. The goal of the initiative, he said, is to create opportunities for madrasa students to contribute to nation-building and economic development through skills development and employment opportunities.
The UGC member said a “bottom-up approach” has been taken to modernizing the curriculum, with the initiative developed through discussion with madrasa teachers and students rather than decisions imposed from above. Based on these discussions, he said, a work plan would be finalized this month and presented to the education ministry and the prime minister.
The workshop also discussed giving madrasa students the opportunity to learn a third language, incorporating them into UGC skills-development training, developing them as entrepreneurs, and leveraging employment opportunities at home and abroad, including through startups.
The event was chaired by Islamic Arabic University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Abu Jafar Khan. Special guests included the university’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr Mohammad Shahidul Islam, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Mohammad Elias Siddiqui, and Treasurer Shahinul Islam. Around 300 teachers and students took part in the workshop.
