Two traders fined for selling expired yogurt in Kamalnagar

A mobile court has fined two traders 30,000 taka for selling expired and adulterated yogurt in Kamalnagar, Lakshmipur.

The penalty was handed down during a raid in the Charlawrence Bazar area of the upazila on Monday (June 1) afternoon. Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Mohammad Arafat Hossain conducted the mobile court.

According to court sources, traders Nurnabi and Nuruddin of the Charlawrence Bazar area had long been selling expired and adulterated yogurt. Acting on such complaints, the upazila administration raided the market in the afternoon and caught them red-handed with expired yogurt, leading to the fines.

Under the Consumer Rights Protection Act 2009, Nuruddin, owner of Babul Dodhi Bitan, was fined 20,000 taka and the other trader, Nurnabi, 10,000 taka. The seized expired yogurt was destroyed on the spot in the public interest.

Upazila Sanitary Inspector Md Riaz Uddin was present during the raid.

Mohammad Arafat Hossain said such drives are conducted to protect consumer rights and public health, and that the upazila administration will continue regular operations to ensure safe food for the public.
