A case has been filed over a cocktail (crude bomb) explosion at a National Citizen Party (NCP) rally in Savar, held following the party’s “July March.” A three-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident.

NCP Dhaka North member secretary Salamat Ullah Rony filed the case against unidentified accused on Monday (July 6) night.

The complainant said the explosion occurred around 9:45pm on Monday during a rally at Tarapur Eidgah field in Savar, injuring six party activists.

Savar Model Police Station investigation officer-in-charge Nur Mohammad confirmed the case, saying operations are underway to arrest the accused, though no one has been arrested so far.

NCP convener and deputy leader of the opposition in parliament Nahid Islam, member secretary and MP Akhter Hossain, and northern region chief coordinator Sarjis Alam were present on stage when the blast occurred. Dhaka district NCP convener engineer Nabila Tasnid was speaking at the time.

Yasir Arafat, a central committee member of the party, told Jugantor the attack was planned, alleging that power to the rally venue had been cut shortly before the blast, followed suddenly by several crude bomb explosions.

Six people were admitted to Enam Medical College Hospital in critical condition, including Mannan Gazi — father of July uprising martyr Srabon Gazi — and two journalists. The injured were identified as Mannan Gazi, Shahin Khandaker, Jashim Uddin, Mohammad Shahadat Hossain, DBC News cameraperson Md. Mojnu, and NPB News multimedia reporter Md. Saidul Islam.

NCP activists said Nahid Islam and other central leaders arrived in Savar around 9pm after finishing a program in Kaliganj, Gazipur, and proceeded to the rally venue with activists in a march. Power went out shortly after their arrival, but central leaders took the stage and the program began.

Witnesses said journalists were positioned in front of the stage, with a bamboo-fenced area behind them for the general public. The blast occurred in that area while Nabila Tasnid was speaking. Smoke spread immediately after the explosion, causing panic at the rally. Power was restored a short time later.

Demanding justice for those responsible for the bomb attack, Nahid Islam and other activists led a procession to the front of Savar Model Police Station. NCP leaders later visited the injured at the hospital.

In brief remarks at the rally, Nahid Islam criticized the power outage and demanded a proper investigation into the cocktail blast and justice for those responsible.

Savar Model Police Station inspector (investigation) Nur Mohammad told Jugantor that a case has been filed against unidentified miscreants and an investigation is underway.
