A college student in the Borhanuddin upazila of Bhola was critically injured when a young man beat him on the head with an iron rod after he protested the harassment of a schoolgirl, his family said. The student, Md. Mamun, 25, a third-year degree student at Bhola Government College, was attacked over an earlier dispute in Ward 1 of Barmanika union, the family said.

The attack took place last Wednesday evening, the family said at a news conference on Monday evening. Mamun was rescued and first taken to Borhanuddin Hospital, then admitted to Bhola Sadar Hospital for treatment, they said.

According to the injured man and local sources, a schoolgirl in Ward 1 of Barmanika was harassed by Md. Shamim, son of Md. Ruhul Amin of neighboring Kuralia Ward 4. Because the schoolgirl was the daughter of Mamun’s cousin, Mamun joined her brother in protesting the incident, the sources said.

Over that dispute, Shamim later found Mamun alone and beat him on the head with an iron rod at night, causing serious injuries, the family said. Mamun was first taken to Borhanuddin Hospital and, after initial treatment, referred to Bhola Sadar Hospital for more advanced care.

Mamun is now admitted to Bhola Sadar Hospital. Students and local residents have expressed concern over the attack and urged the local member of parliament, the deputy commissioner, the superintendent of police and other law-enforcement authorities to take prompt legal action after a proper investigation, the family said.

Mamun said Shamim, from the neighboring area, had harassed his niece, a schoolgirl. “I protested over that incident along with the girl’s brother,” he said. The matter was resolved at the time through a family assurance that the young man would not trouble the schoolgirl again, he said. Over that dispute, Shamim and several others attacked him with an iron rod on Wednesday night intending to kill him, Mamun said.

Mamun said local residents responded to his cries, rescued him and admitted him to Borhanuddin Hospital. As his condition worsened, the attending doctor referred him to Bhola Sadar Hospital for advanced treatment, he said.

Abdus Salam, a brother of Shamim, said he was in Dhaka. He said his own brother had been beaten earlier. Expressing regret over the attack, he said the family was trying to settle the matter.

Md. Moniruzzaman Monir, the officer-in-charge of Borhanuddin police station, said no complaint had yet been filed over the incident. Legal action would be taken after an investigation once a complaint is received, he said.
