The United States has begun a series of military strikes on Iran in response to attacks on three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the operation began on Wednesday. The command claims the strikes are meant to force Iran to pay a “heavy price” for attacking commercial vessels operated by civilians in international waters.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said three tankers were damaged within a 24-hour period on Monday and Tuesday. Earlier on Tuesday, a US official said Iran would have to “face consequences” for these actions, calling the attacks “completely unacceptable.”

Iran has not claimed responsibility for the tanker attacks.

In a statement on social media platform X, CENTCOM said the US operation is being conducted in response to Iran’s attacks. The command claimed: “Iran’s demonstrated aggression is unreasonable, dangerous, and a clear violation of the ceasefire.”

Meanwhile, Qatar and Saudi Arabia have also condemned the attacks. Both countries said one tanker each from their nations was attacked while transiting through or near the Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier on Tuesday, the United States revoked a waiver that had temporarily eased oil sanctions imposed on Iran.
