From the coming fiscal year, taxpayers will be able to file income-tax returns throughout the year — with a tax break for filing before the set time and an extra charge for filing late. Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury announced this in the 2026-27 budget proposal placed in parliament on Thursday.

The finance minister proposed that taxpayers filing in the first quarter of the fiscal year (July-September) get a rebate of 5 percent of the payable tax or a maximum of 25,000 taka, whichever is less. Filing in the second quarter (October-December) carries no extra rebate or penalty — taxpayers simply pay the assessed tax. Filing in the third quarter (January-March) requires an extra payment of 2 percent of the payable tax or 3,000 taka, whichever is more, and filing in the last quarter (April-June) an extra 5 percent of the payable tax or 5,000 taka, whichever is more. The arrangement is proposed to encourage timely filing and make tax administration more orderly.
