Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps says it has developed long-range missiles capable of changing course and redefining their targets while in flight, a claim that was not independently verified.
IRGC spokesman Hossein Mahabbi described the technology at an event in Qazvin in northern Iran on Monday and told state news agency IRNA that the missiles could evade modern air-defense networks and strike designated targets.
Mahabbi said the technology was intended not only to destroy buildings and military equipment but also to disrupt an adversary’s decision-making process and security network. He claimed Iran had used the technology against critical parts of an opposing power grid during a recent joint military escalation with the United States.
He said U.S. bases in the Middle East and facilities operated by U.S. allies in the Persian Gulf had faced Tehran’s military pressure. The account of recent attacks and agreements was presented by Iranian officials and was not independently verified.
Mahabbi’s statement about in-flight maneuvering has raised concern among international security analysts because it could complicate missile-defense planning.
