A young man is seen approaching from in front of a garment factory. At one point he pulls a pistol from the back pocket of his trousers. He then fires towards the factory and continues walking as he fires.

A video of such an incident in front of a garment factory in the Kalurghat heavy-industry area of Chattogram city has spread on the social-media platform Facebook. Police said the incident took place on Saturday morning.

According to police and local residents, a group of five people took up position in front of the Yunesco garment factory in the Kalurghat BSCIC industrial area on Saturday around noon. One of them was carrying a firearm.

In the 37-second CCTV footage that has spread, a young man in a pink T-shirt is seen advancing towards the road from in front of the factory. Several pedestrians are walking past him at the time. The man in the T-shirt then stands on the road, aims at the factory and fires blanks. Later, while moving along the road, he is seen raising the pistol and firing again.

Local people claimed that one faction is active over establishing dominance, extortion and control of factories in the BSCIC industrial area. After Saturday’s shooting, a local Jubo Dal leader was also threatened, they said. The Jubo Dal leader did not answer his phone when called for comment. Police, citing the investigation, did not want to disclose anyone’s name.

Jasim Uddin, officer-in-charge of Chandgaon police station, said police were investigating after receiving information about the shooting in the BSCIC area. No one had yet filed a written complaint at the station, he said, but police were investigating the incident. For the sake of the investigation, nothing detailed could be said yet.
