A little sunlight can bring major benefits

Sunlight helps the body produce vitamin D, which supports bones, muscles and normal bodily functions. More time in the sun does not necessarily bring more benefit: excessive ultraviolet radiation can damage skin and eyes and increase the risk of skin cancer.

The time needed differs by age, skin colour, exposed body area, season and UV level. Darker skin has more melanin and may need longer to produce vitamin D, while lighter skin may produce it sooner.

UVB starts vitamin-D production in the skin. People who spend most of the day indoors, rarely go outside or cover most of their body are at greater risk of deficiency, but long periods in intense sun are not necessary. Short regular exposure while walking or doing daily activities may help; avoid sunburn and protect yourself from excessive UV.
