Funeral prayers have been held for Ishayat Shahriar Apratim, 13, the only son of Dr Nahida Begum, associate professor in the Bengali department at Cumilla University.

The prayers were held at about 10am on Sunday (September 20) on the central field of Cumilla University.

Teachers and students of the university and a large number of other people took part. He was to be buried after a second funeral prayer at the Gandhamati Eidgah ground in Kotbari at about 11am.

His body was recovered on Saturday afternoon (September 19) from the wooded Lalmai Sananda hill area beside the campus. His mother, Dr Nahida Begum, associate professor in the Bengali department at Cumilla University, said Apratim left the family home in the Kotbari area of ward 24, under Cumilla Sadar South police station, at about 3.30pm on Friday (September 18) and did not return.

Apratim’s father, K M Firoz Shahriar, filed a general diary at Cumilla Sadar South police station over the disappearance.

Apratim was a seventh-grade pupil at Cumilla Border Guard Public School.

Members of the family searched a number of places without finding him.

Dr Nahida Begum wrote in a post on her Facebook page during the search that she had been unable to find her son since 3pm, that his name was Apratim, that he was 13 and in class seven, and that he had gone out to take photographs with friends using her iPhone and had not come back. She appealed for help from anyone who could give it and said she had informed the police.
